For the town of Elkhart, Indiana, we designed Ivy Row--two blocks of low-rise residences as part of a new neighborhood called the Delta. Conceived of as modern interpretations of traditional townhouses, Ivy Row comprises three-story buildings containing a total of ninety apartment units. Each entrance leads to a total of six apartments, two on each of the three floors.
White brick, standing seam roofing, elegant windows, and crisp detailing contribute to the dignified, contemporary appearance of the facades. The buildings are set back from the busy road for privacy and have landscaped front terraces and wide steps to the common entrances. Along each block, the top floor is inset to create Parisian-style studios with sloped ceilings and dormer windows. At the two corner units facing a cross street, rotundas serve as bookends to the separate rows and act as signature features of the entire composition.
Contextually responsive to the neighboring apartment building called The Clark, the complex was designed in accordance with principles of the walkable city.
