We prepared a master plan for this new community of affordable housing on a 45-acre site in Brooklyn, N.Y. Commissioned by East Brooklyn Congregations (EBC), this is the largest development of affordable housing for first-time homebuyers in New York City, with over 800 homes.
Our plan transformed a former brownfield site into a thriving neighborhood that encourages interaction among residents by creating a humanly scaled pattern of walkable streets. We called for parking to be confined to the rear of the buildings, allowing each residence to open directly onto the street. Inboard from the parking area, the pattern of streets was broken down into smaller groupings of residences around small parks. The community offers a mix of affordable apartments, rentals, and townhouse ownership.
Our firm was also commissioned to design the residences and develop the master plan for a surrounding mixed-use developmentāsee the Gateway Estates description on our website.
