Brownsville Master Plan

This master plan tackles one of the last frontiers of poverty and crime in New York City, the housing projects of Brownsville, through a “re-urbanization” of the neighborhood by restoring the original street pattern with its existing fabric of shops and community facilities. New, low-density housing is added along the streets and on the roofs of many of the existing buildings. Spaces for urban agriculture crop up in underutilized spaces between the towers in the form of small fields and greenhouses. These gardens and small patches of farmable land will serve as a shared community activity and will provide fresh, healthy vegetables to residents. Further “greening” the project is a series of solar, geothermal, and wind power initiatives that could transform Brownsville into a national model energy site.
