Chicago Townhouse

This modern townhouse in Chicago seems to float behind its private garden wall, framed by traditional houses on both sides. Conceived of as a cube within a cube, the two-story living space on the second floor projects dramatically above the ground floor with large glass windows facing the street. Within this loft-like volume, the master suite is a second floating cube, suspended over part of the living space at the front of the townhouse. It has its own interior façade, a glazed wall that borrows light by opening to the tall room below. A long, straight staircase with cantilevered steps runs along one side of the house and leads to the main level, where vintage modern furniture and parachute cloth curtains highlight the minimalist design. Two guest bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the ground floor.
