Shelter Island House

This waterfront house is composed of classically detailed modern forms that evoke a Roman seaside villa. Comprised of identifiable geometric parts, it appears as a village set in the woods, mediating the site's contrasting natural elements. The barrel-vaulted roof of the living room and the pediment of the master bedroom highlight the verticality of the surrounding forest and the sky, while the children's wing with its low-pitched roof echoes the horizontal sweep of rolling lawn, beach, and water. A pergola alongside the entrance courtyard initiates an entry sequence with strong perspective views extending to the sea and horizon.
