Congregation Habonim Adaptive Reuse

Congregation Habonim, an Upper West Side Conservative synagogue, was exploring options to relocate from its original 1930’s building into an adjacent historic Armory. The space planning and programming studies explore how the Armory’s interior can be organized successfully to fulfill the needs of the synagogue and its future tenants.  In particular, we have explored ways to introduce daylight into the main space and create a sense of intimacy within such a large volume. The synagogue’s program includes a Sanctuary and social hall for 375 congregants, six classrooms for nursery school children, additional classrooms for the religious school program, and administration space for the Rabbi and executive directors.
