The Jennings

This recently completed 54,000-square-foot development in the Crotona Park East neighborhood of the Bronx provides secure housing for women who are survivors of domestic violence and their children. The 42 apartments range in size from 600-square-foot one-bedroom units, 800-square-foot two-bedroom units, and 1,100-square-foot three-bedroom units.

The site stands at the terminus of Charlotte Street which was the epicenter of the devastated South Bronx of the 1970s, where Jimmy Carter visited to understand the situation. The L-shaped plan maximizes the number of units and leaves open space for a front garden. The facade has a pattern of angled bricks, creating a sense of a protective shield to impart a sense of safety to the women residents. In contrast, the perforated window grilles are in pastel colors inspired by Andy Warhol’s Flower paintings, which add a cheerful, upbeat note.

The design complies with Enterprise Green Community standards by incorporating a green roof, sustainable materials, Energy Star appliances, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Tenant safety is also a primary concern. Security features include electronic access entry, CCTV, video intercom, and a constantly staffed security desk. Additional tenant amenities include stroller storage, a laundry, computer room, and a library as well as a second garden and play yard at the rear of the building.

Winner of the SARA NY Design Award of Honor, 2020, the 2020 AIA NYS Excelsior Award of Honor for Public Housing and Interior Design Magazine’s NYCxDesign Award of Honor, 2020, shortlisted in Architizer's A+ Awards, longlisted in the 2021 Dezeen Awards.
